Episode 1 of “The Espionage Diaries” Headed to Revision

So I was able to finish Episode 1, but it has a little ways to go before I release it.  Right now it is nearly 2700 words, and sloppy at best.  I am trying to incorporate less redundant description into my writing at this point, so I’m going to be focusing on whittling this baby down a little bit.

Once it is complete, you will be the first to know!

The Espionage Diaries

I have started work on a new series of short stories, one in which I hope to allow for some guest writing, called The Espionage Diaries.  I have created the summary page to the left giving the basic idea  behind it (the summary needs a lot of work), and am already 1300+ words into episode one.  The goal is for each episode to take place from the point of view of one of the “spies” recruited by the organization, so the possibilities are endless.

I will post more when I can, but I don’t want to give too much away too early.

Fudoshin, Some Minor Adjustments

In my learning process here on The Readery, I am allowing myself free reign to make adjustments to my posts in hopes that everything I write will improve with time and critique.  I am always looking for ways to make my writing better, and every time I look at something I’ve written, I find something to groan about.

That being said, I have made some changes to the WoW fan fic titled “Fudoshin” below.  I added some dialogue, removed some repeating words, and added some actions or description here and there, but did my best not to alter the story too much, which will be the persistent goal for each of the writings I adjust.

By all means, feel free to critique!

World of Warcraft: “Fudoshin”

The bamboo whistled as it passed  swiftly in front of Miridan’s face, a blow that would have broken his nose had it even grazed him.  He continued his backward momentum, turning head over heels and landing smoothly on the balls of his feet to immediately come up ready.  He realized suddenly that the pandaren had pursued, and the monk led the way into Miridan’s personal space with a long stride that actually turned into a powerful kick somewhere along the way.

The night elf twisted to block the round kick, taking the brunt on the outer portion of his upper arm.  The limb bore the shock with no grace, and bolts of pain shot like strands of a spider web all through its muscles.  He was able to maintain the grasp on his left-hand dagger, but he could not feel his fingers other than knowing they were wrapped around the handle.  He intercepted the following top-down swipe of the bamboo staff with the dagger in his right, and was able to keep the attack far enough away to step aside the next horizontal one.

The bear was relentless, he had to give him that.  When Miridan had laid down the challenge he never expected this to be easy, but apparently he’d not credited the other nearly enough.  The techniques were different than anything he had ever been faced with, and the panda was both strong and agile, the latter of which belied by the mass of his belly.  Of course, he too was a member of a larger race that was known for its grace,  but the pandaren monks seemed capable of nearly heroic feats of agility in battle despite a build that he could only describe as plump.

A series of pokes and swipes came in rapid succession, and Miridan dodged, parried, or blocked each of them.  He was trying to allow his arm some recovery time, but the Continue reading

Good Things a-comin’!

Just wanted to take a moment and share a few things that have been on my mind, namely the projects I have rolling around in my mind.  I have been having a little difficulty focusing on the writing over the past few days, but I think it’s because I am finding so many inspirations that are bringing about the desire to write so many things.  That being said, here is a short list of the short stories I plan to post in the same format as I have “I Am Nephalem”, though not in the order listed:

  • A spy story.  I have an interesting concept for a story about a spy organization told from the perspective of the spies themselves.  It would be episodic, with individual storylines having little to do with one another.
  • A World of Warcraft fan fiction.  Just for the sake of doing it, and it will likely be just a time killer sort of project.
  • A horror story.  I have a few ideas, but more than anything I want to try my hand at sparking an emotion through writing.
  • Something meaningful.  I want to tell a story that means something, and isn’t all about monsters or action; something with true character depth that can elicit a feeling for the characters.  I want to manage it subtly, however, essentially writing a realistic character and not one with some sort of grounded belief – I guess I mean I want to do it without cliche character types.
  • A book.  I already have the idea and have been rolling it abound in the ole noggin for months, I am just allowing myself the writing of short stories in order to improve.  When I do this, I will likely seek out traditional publishing methods.

Part 2 of I Am Nephalem Available!

I have released part 2, titled “Wirt’s Restless Night”.  I am really proud of this piece in particular, because I feel like I found a real depth of understanding with the character.  That, and I wrote it all and had it revised within about two hours.  As in the one before, I only allowed myself a once-over, but I still feel good about it!

To access it, simply mouse over “I Am Nephalem: A Diablo Fan Story” to the left and click on the title.  Enjoy!
